Chaartaar
Haeri came into the group through singer Arman Garshasbi, who was already friends with him and Fathi.6 The first song, “Dar Hasrate Maah,” had music but no words. Haeri’s first lyric was rejected. After several hours talking with the others, he decided that the words needed to express the group’s mood rather than his own, and wrote the replacement lyric.6
Writing to Fathi’s music gave Haeri a starting point: as he put it, Fathi in a sense supplied the metre, and he translated the composer’s feeling into words.6 In a 2013 interview he explained that he drew inspiration from music, particularly Fathi’s music within Chaartaar. He described four stages of making a song, with all four members involved at each stage.7 Fathi qualified the method: putting melody before words was the approach they had chosen for the first album, rather than a fixed rule for the group.7
Haeri’s understanding of a lyric extended to some of Hafez’s poems, whose romantic, lyrical quality made them songs in his view.2 Chaartaar approached its debut as a collection of love songs; Baaraan Toee came out in February 2014.24 Reviewing it that year, Keyvan Hosseini connected the melancholy content and metrical form of Haeri’s words with Garshasbi’s Iranian vocal style, seeing their relationship as an important part of the group’s musical identity.8
Chaartaar followed with Jaddeh Miraghsad in 2015 and its third album, Darya Kojaast, with Haeri continuing to write the words.910 Reviewing the third album in 2018, Mohammadreza Jafari thought the lyrics had become excessively metaphorical and lost their earlier accessible simplicity. He also noted that Haeri had begun releasing singles as a singer.11
Later work
In January 2024 Haeri publicly objected to the use of some of his lyrics on Garshasbi’s solo album Az To Goftam, saying he had not agreed or consented. Garshasbi replied that he had paid Haeri $1,000 for each lyric and had credited him throughout.12
Haeri’s writing also continued with Fathi beyond Chaartaar. For Soofi Namazi, Haeri wrote the words and Fathi the music for “Labat Che Gooyad?” and “Aseman Be Aseman”.513 Based in Canada, Haeri also teaches poetry and songwriting. His teaching at CLUE Academy brings literary understanding together with practical songwriting, with attention to poetic perception, individual voice and the structure of a lyric.3
