Life & work
Damahi and Seleidon
Salari sang shorveh and backing vocals on “Sogand,” a song on Damahi’s first album, released in 2015. The words were by the southern songwriter Ebrahim Monsefi, whose work would recur in Salari’s own repertoire.89106
By 2016, he had released songs with the guitarist and oud player Ebrahim Alavi. In February 2017 he performed with the pianist Amir Darabi’s jazz trio at the first Southern Nights festival in Tehran. Yeganeh was arranging his independent songs by then; the festival performance combined Monsefi’s words and melodies with jazz elements.1112613
He went on to sing with Seleidon, a group formed at Jazz Nights. At the third Southern Nights festival in January 2019, they played older songs in new arrangements and a new composition by Damahi’s singer Reza Koolaghani. Salari introduced the set with a text stressing the cultural and musical differences between regions of southern Iran.14
Southern songs and songwriting
For “Sham' o Shab”, Salari traced a song’s history through the wedding celebrations of Tiab, near Minab. He explained that people had sung its poem during a romantic theatrical performance called Khosrow Shirin. The musician Qanbar Rastgoo later set it for the jofti and a local orchestra. Salari described Navid Najjar Gheidel’s new arrangement as an attempt to preserve its romantic mood with oud, guitar and simple percussion.7
His voice also appears in Franak’s death scene in the animated film The Last Fiction. The scene’s Persian lullaby adapts a solo performance by Khalo Ghanbar, the singer and musician.15
Salari wrote music of his own as well. In 2021 he sang “Eshgh Hamin Bood”, his setting of words by Mahmoud Tolouei, with Yeganeh arranging and playing piano. Koolaghani joined him as a guest singer on “Baron”, which Salari composed to words by Amir Mehdi Asghari.161718
The Wanderer and later work
In 2023, Salari released The Wanderer. He worked with Yeganeh’s arrangements and an ensemble including Alavi and the drummer Shayan Fathi. He co-wrote “Booye Gol” with Yeganeh and the bassist Dara Daraei; for “Tark-e Diar,” he sang Monsefi’s words to music by Daraei.19202112
At his Bandar Abbas concerts later that year, he opened with the album’s title song and included earlier songs such as “Sham’ o Shab.” He closed with “Khatereh”, another song using Monsefi’s words.22
His work with Yeganeh continued through new interpretations of earlier compositions. On “Ghazal-e-Khoon”, he sang Monsefi’s words to music by Soheil Nafisi. For “Ze Khiyalat”, he took up Abdolwahab Shahidi’s “Ze Jahan Del Borkandam” with Yeganeh’s arrangement.2324
Darabi, whose trio had accompanied him at Southern Nights, became a songwriting collaborator on “Mashrouh’e Tanhaee”. Salari and Darabi composed it to Tolouei’s words; Darabi arranged the recording and played piano and bass.625
