Pallett is an Iranian band formed in Tehran in 2009 by singer Omid Nemati and clarinetist Rouzbeh Esfandarmaz.2 Its songs draw on classical and contemporary Persian poetry, with music developed together by the musicians.35 After Mr. Violet and Tehran, Smile!, the band began experimenting with electronics while keeping its acoustic instruments at the centre of its sound.267

Life & work
Beginnings
The musicians knew one another before forming Pallett. Nemati, Dariush Azar and Esfandarmaz had worked with Dang Show, but they had already been playing together informally. Nemati recalled that the Mahak charity asked them to fill in when Dang Show was unavailable. Esfandarmaz gathered the others, and they spent five days developing their ideas for the concert. Three of those pieces later appeared on the first album. After touring with Dang Show, Nemati returned to work with the others on Pallett.5
They built songs around ideas brought to rehearsals: a melody from guitarist Kaveh Salehi, for example, or a poem from Nemati. Nemati usually chose the poems, but the others had to agree with the choice. He explained the name Pallett as different colours coming together to make a new one.5
The first records
Pallett released its debut album, Mr. Violet, in 2013 and Tehran, Smile! in 2015.2 While working towards another full album, the band released the EP Endless Ending in February 2017 with a DVD of live performances. Nemati said they needed more time for the next album and wanted to shorten the wait for listeners. Two of the EP’s five songs were new; the others had appeared online before, but were rearranged for the collection.26
At that point Esfandarmaz described a plan to introduce electronics without losing the acoustic foundation of the music. In 2019 Nemati said the next album would use new instruments and players and explore a little electronic music, while retaining the band’s approach.67
Prime Meridian and later work
Pallett released Prime Meridian in March 2021. Salehi, cellist Mahyar Tahmasbi and Nemati made it with other musicians, including Makan Ashgvari, who sang on “In Majara”.8
The line-up changed over time. Nemati, Tahmasbi and flautist Shaghayegh Sadeghian form the band’s current core; Esfandarmaz, Azar, Salehi and Hesam Mohammadianpour are former members.3 In 2025 Nemati and Monicki sang together on “It Won’t Stay the Same”.910
In October 2026 the band announced that it was cancelling its tour of Iran after being told that its woman instrumentalist could not appear on stage in some cities. It said it would perform when all seven musicians could take the stage on equal terms.11
