آرسامس گروه دث متالی است که علی مدارشاهی در سال ۲۰۰۲ میلادی در مشهد تشکیل داد. اعضای گروه از تاریخ و اساطیر ایران باستان الهام می‌گیرند و گام‌های ایرانی را با گیتارهای دیستورت‌شده، آواز خشن و ضرب‌های سریع دث متال ترکیب می‌کنند. مدارشاهی ابتدا درامر گروه بود و در سال ۲۰۰۸ خوانندهٔ آن شد.۵۶۷
آرسامس نخستین آلبومش، «هویت جاودان»، را در سال ۲۰۱۰ منتشر کرد و در خارج از ایران کنسرت داد. اعضای گروه در سال ۲۰۲۰ گفتند که پس از صدور حکم زندان، ایران را ترک کرده‌اند. آن‌ها به ضبط موسیقی ادامه دادند و بعدها از شیوه‌ای گفتند که در آن ریف‌ها را ابتدا با سه‌تار می‌سازند و سپس برای گیتار الکتریک تغییر می‌دهند.۷۸۹

زندگی و کار
سال‌های نخست
آرسامس کارش را با تمرین در زیرزمین‌های مشهد آغاز کرد. مدارشاهی بعدها گفت پیدا کردن درامر متال در ایران دشوار بود؛ به همین دلیل پیش از تشکیل گروه، خودش درامز یاد گرفته بود. در یکی از ترکیب‌های نخست گروه، او درامز می‌نواخت و حامد عزیزی می‌خواند. وحید زهی در نوشتن شعرها همکاری می‌کرد، آن‌ها را به انگلیسی ترجمه می‌کرد و با موسیقی هماهنگ می‌ساخت.۵۱۰
مدارشاهی تا سال ۲۰۰۸ درامر آرسامس ماند. به گفتهٔ او، ادارهٔ گروه و نواختن درامز در کنار هم دشوار شده بود و سازش را به درامری جوان‌تر سپرد. هم‌زمان، خوانندهٔ گروه رفت و مدارشاهی جای او را گرفت. اعضای آرسامس تمرین‌هایشان را در خانه ادامه دادند. آن‌ها در سال ۲۰۱۰ می‌گفتند می‌توانند در خانه برای کنسرت آماده شوند و روی ضبط‌هایشان کار کنند، اما امکان اجرای زنده در ایران را ندارند.۵۶
هویت جاودان و کنسرت‌های خارج از ایران
آرسامس تاریخ ایران را موضوع ترانه‌هایش کرد. اعضای گروه می‌گفتند می‌خواهند از این تاریخ برای ساخت موسیقی حماسی الهام بگیرند و در عین حال، گیتارهای دیستورت‌شده، آواز بم و خشن و درامز سریع دث متال را حفظ کنند. آن‌ها در سال ۲۰۱۱ تفاوت کارشان را در شعرها و استفاده از گام‌های ایرانی توضیح دادند و آن را سبکی جدا از دث متال نمی‌دانستند.۶۷
گروه نخستین آلبومش، «هویت جاودان»، را در سال ۲۰۱۰ منتشر کرد. اعضای آرسامس آلبوم را به رانی جیمز دیو، خوانندهٔ هوی متال، تقدیم کردند تا پس از مرگ او با خانواده و شنوندگانش همدردی کنند. آرسامس آثار آمون آمارت، کریتور، کارکاس و سپولتورا را در «ادای احترام به جنگجویان متال» بازخوانی کرد و «باران خون» از اسلیر را هم ضبط کرد.۷۱۱۱۲
آرسامس در سال ۲۰۰۹ در جشنوارهٔ یونی‌راک استانبول پیش از آمون آمارت اجرا کرد. در مارس ۲۰۱۲ هم در متال میهم ۴ در زمین جاوالاکلِ لالیتپور در نپال روی صحنه رفت؛ ناپالم دث گروه اصلی آن کنسرت بود.۷۱۳
خروج از ایران
اعضای آرسامس در اوت ۲۰۲۰ به لاد وایر گفتند که در سال ۲۰۱۷ هنگام تمرین در استودیو بازداشت شده بودند. به گفتهٔ آن‌ها، پس از نزدیک به یک ماه بازداشت با وثیقه آزاد شدند و به آن‌ها گفته شد کار، انتشار موسیقی و فروش محصولات گروه را متوقف کنند. آن‌ها شیطان‌پرست بودن گروه را رد کردند.۸
اعضای گروه گفتند پس از بسته شدن وب‌سایت و حساب اینستاگرامشان، فعالیت را از سر گرفتند. بنا بر همان روایت، احضار دوباره به دادگاه و صدور حکم زندان باعث شد ایران را ترک کنند.۸
ضبط‌های بعدی
آرسامس در دو تک‌آهنگ سال ۲۰۲۴ دوباره سراغ کوروش رفت: «نام من کوروش است (My Name Is Cyrus)» و «نام من کوروش است (Persian)». سازهای سنتی هم در ساخت موسیقیِ دورهٔ بعد گروه نقش پیدا کردند. آرسامس در سال ۲۰۲۶ توضیح داد که ریف‌ها را ابتدا با سه‌تار می‌سازد و ضبط می‌کند، سپس آن‌ها را برای گیتار الکتریک تغییر می‌دهد.۱۴۱۵۹
گروه در «سرباز (اجرای سنتی)»، که در سال ۲۰۲۶ منتشر شد، ترانهٔ آیرن میدن را با سه‌تار و دف بازخوانی کرد. اعضای آرسامس هنگام توضیح این ضبط گفتند با این سازها می‌خواستند ترانه را با سنت‌های موسیقی ایران بازآفرینی کنند.۱۶۱۷

When I started Arsames in 2002, I was the drummer, and I never planned to become the band's vocalist.
We started in underground basements in Mashhad, one of the most religious cities in Iran, where underground metal had almost no place to exist.
I kept playing drums with Arsames until 2008. But managing the band and playing drums at the same time was a big challenge. I decided it was time to pass the drums to a younger, more powerful drummer.
Around the same time, our vocalist left the band, so I took on a new role and became the vocalist. And I've been doing it ever since!
Back then, finding a skilled metal drummer in Iran was extremely difficult. So, years before starting the band, I began learning drums because I wanted to be the drummer of my own band and make things happen.

Arsames focuses on the cultural and historical background of Iran for the lyrics. I think we are looking for something from our history to create epic music that no one has done before.
Metal music is banned in Iran so we can't play it live, but we can practice it in our homes. At least we can make sure the band is ready for gigs and can work on our albums.

Most of our songs are based on ancient Persian mythology.
Well, it’s not a separable genre. All death metal elements like heavily distorted guitars, deep growling vocals, blast beat drumming, etc. are used in it. The only vital distinction lies in our lyrics and the use of Persian scales in songwriting.
Well, the band had released the debut album “Immortal Identity” in 2010. How have the responses been so far?
In 2009, we performed in an international three-day Unirock Festival in Istanbul, Turkey, where we opened for Amon Amarth.
Yes, Ronnie J. Dio was a great person – the voice of metal, and his career was so huge and honorable that we decided to dedicate our album to him.

Our Instagram page, official website ... banned and they shot down all for a year, but we built a new Instagram again and [started] to be active until few weeks ago [when] the court called us again and they gave us 15 years [in] prison. So we had to escape from Iran.
We [were] arrested in 2017 when we were in our studio during rehearsal. They moved us to jail that day and [did] not [tell] our family about where we [were] for a week.
