اش کوشا، با نام اصلی اشکان کوشانژاد، موسیقی‌دان و تهیه‌کنندهٔ موسیقی الکترونیک زادهٔ ایران است. او صداهای ضبط‌شده را کش می‌دهد و دگرگون می‌کند و با تکیه بر آموخته‌های آهنگ‌سازی کلاسیک به آن‌ها ساختار می‌دهد.۲۳ پس از کار در گروه‌های راک و الکترونیک، در آثار انفرادی‌اش آهنگ‌سازی حساب‌شده را با نتایج پیش‌بینی‌نشدهٔ پردازش نرم‌افزاری همراه کرد. در کار با خوانندهٔ نرم‌افزاری «یونا»، او از میان صداها و ملودی‌های تولیدشده انتخاب می‌کند و به آن‌ها شکل ترانه می‌دهد.۲۴۵۶

زندگی و کار
آغاز کار و تیک ایت ایزی هاسپیتال
کوشا از حدود پانزده‌سالگی موسیقی را جدی دنبال کرد و در هجده‌سالگی به کنسرواتوار تهران رفت. او بعدها گفت آشنایی با موسیقی موگوای و سیگور روس از طریق چند سی‌دی نگاهش را به موسیقی تغییر داد؛ به‌ویژه آلبوم «Von» از سیگور روس. ترانه‌های اولیه‌اش را به انگلیسی می‌نوشت، چون بیان احساسش به این زبان برایش راحت‌تر بود.۷۸
در سال ۲۰۰۷، کنسرت گروه راک فونت به حکم سه هفته زندان برای کوشا و هم‌گروهی‌هایش انجامید. پس از تعطیلی فونت، او همراه نگار شقاقی گروه ایندی و الکترونیک تیک ایت ایزی هاسپیتال را تشکیل داد. انتشار کارهایشان در مای‌اسپیس به دعوت یک جشنواره در منچستر و آشنایی با بهمن قبادی انجامید. آن‌ها در ساخت فیلم «کسی از گربه‌های ایرانی خبر نداره» با او همکاری کردند؛ فیلمی که از تجربه‌های خودشان در موسیقی ایران الهام می‌گرفت. کوشا و شقاقی هنگام اجرای برنامه‌های بعدی در بریتانیا تصمیم گرفتند همان‌جا بمانند و سرانجام پناهندگی گرفتند.۹۲
پس از آنکه مسیر موسیقی آن دو جدا شد، کوشا مدتی کار فنی و تهیه‌کنندگی برای دیگر موسیقی‌دانان انجام داد و سپس روی آثار انفرادی‌اش متمرکز شد. شقاقی در سال ۱۳۹۵ نیز، هنگام انتشار «I AKA I»، جلد آلبوم‌های او را طراحی می‌کرد.۱۰
آهنگ‌سازی با صدای ضبط‌شده
کوشا با ضبط‌های محیطی‌اش مانند اشیایی رفتار می‌کرد که می‌توان آن‌ها را کش داد، دگرگون کرد و از نو شکل داد. آموختن هارمونی و کنترپوان به او راهی داد تا صداهای ناآشنای حاصل از این پردازش را سازمان دهد. در نخستین آلبومش، «GUUD»، که سال ۱۳۹۴ منتشر شد، اجازه می‌داد نتایج پیش‌بینی‌نشدهٔ کار رایانه بر آهنگ‌سازی اثر بگذارد. او روشش را نیمی کنترل و نیمی سپردن تصمیم به رایانه توصیف می‌کرد: پس از کش‌دادن صدا، به جزئیاتی گوش می‌داد که در آن پدید آمده بودند.۳۴۱۱۹
برای «I AKA I» در سال ۱۳۹۵، از میان حدود هشتاد قطعهٔ آماده انتخاب کرد. حالا در جای‌دادن صداها اطمینان بیشتری داشت و می‌گفت هر صدا را آگاهانه در جای خودش گذاشته است. او در این آلبوم می‌کوشید ریتم‌های بندری جنوب ایران را برای موسیقی الکترونیک رقص به کار بگیرد.۱۲۴۱۰
تجسم او از صدا در علاقه‌اش به واقعیت مجازی نقش داشت. کوشا می‌گفت آکوردهای کیبورد را با به‌خاطرسپردن شکل‌ها آموخته و حتی پس از یادگیری نت‌خوانی همچنان هندسی فکر می‌کند. او می‌خواست شنوندگان هم شکل‌های متحرکی را ببینند که هنگام ساخت موسیقی در ذهنش می‌دید.۸ در مرداد ۱۳۹۶، «AKTUAL» را در محیط TheWaveVR اجرا کرد. نیک شلتون همراه استرنج‌لوپ استودیوز و آرون لمکی روی پویانمایی و کارگردانی هنری آن کار کرد. سال بعد کوشا آلبوم «AKTUAL» را منتشر کرد که خودش نوشته و تهیه کرده بود.۱۳۱۴
برای ای‌پی «کایمرا» در سال ۱۳۹۶، او سراغ ضبط‌های میدانی آرشیوی رفت که تروپن‌موزه در اختیارش گذاشت. این کار بخشی از پروژهٔ «Unlocking Sounds» بود؛ همکاری‌ای که هنرمندان را دعوت می‌کرد با مجموعهٔ ضبط‌های مردم‌نگارانهٔ KIT در مؤسسهٔ صدا و تصویر هلند آثار تازه بسازند.۱۵۱۶
صدا و یونا
کوشا کار روی یونا را در سال ۲۰۱۷ با تصور یک خوانندهٔ مهمان آغاز کرد. او بعدها توضیح داد که دشواری‌های عملی ضبط با خوانندگان، از انتظارهای طولانی تا هزینهٔ آوردن همکاران به استودیو، در تصمیمش برای ساختن صدایی برای خودش نقش داشت.۱۷۱۸ تجربه با صدای خودش هم ادامه داشت: در «بی‌نام»، منتشرشده در سال ۱۳۹۷، به انگلیسی و زبانی ابداعی می‌خواند که از جدولی از هجاهای مرتبط ساخته بود.۱۹
یونا راه دیگری برای ساخت موسیقی با آواز بود. در سال ۲۰۱۸، نرم‌افزار آن جمله‌ها، ملودی‌ها به‌صورت اطلاعات میدی، و آواز را با پردازش تبدیل متن به گفتار تولید می‌کرد. کوشا ترانهٔ نهایی را میکس و تهیه می‌کرد. او این پروژه را کاربردی محدود از هوش مصنوعی برای فراهم‌کردن کلام، ملودی و صدا می‌دانست؛ قصد و سلیقهٔ انسانی همچنان تعیین می‌کرد چه چیزی کامل و منتشر شود. او در همان سال با یونا روی «بازگشت صفر» کار کرد.۶۵
برای «HALLUCiNATO»، کوشا طی دو سال نمونه‌های صوتی، توالی‌ها و ملودی‌هایی تولید کرد و سپس آن‌ها را برای اجرا آماده کرد. در اجرایی که سال ۱۳۹۹ در مجموعهٔ ۱۸۰ د استرند لندن فیلم‌برداری شد، با تصویرسازی ایزابلا وینتروپ، تنظیم را هنگام میکس زنده نهایی کرد.۱۷ آلبوم در آذر همان سال منتشر شد.۲۰
او در «ده سال واریاسیون» در سال ۱۴۰۴ به ملودی‌های پیشین برگشت و از موسیقی‌ای که در دههٔ گذشته نوشته یا منتشر کرده بود، واریاسیون‌ها و تنظیم‌های تازه‌ای ساخت. در اکتبر ۲۰۲۶ نیز «EgoDTH» را منتشر کرد و آن را اثر دیگری با یونا، این بار «نسخهٔ ۳٫۰»، نامید.۲۱۲۲

On his release—and with Font now in effect shut down—Koosha formed Take It Easy Hospital, a new indie/electronic/pop band, with friend Negar Shaghaghi. They built up a big following on myspace and, off the back of that, were invited to play the In The City Festival in Manchester. The Kurdish-Iranian film director, Bahnman Ghobadi, got in touch around the same time, asking them to collaborate with him on a film about the Iranian underground music scene.

Born Ashkan Kooshanejad, Ash split his early years between Tehran and Frankfurt, where his father worked in the printing industry.
The film, No One Knows About Persian Cats, loosely based on their own experiences, won the Un Certain Regard Special Jury Prize at Cannes in 2009. But Iran was entering another “destructive” phase, with a new crack-down on music. The band’s drummer was arrested and beaten, and the Iranian-American co-writer of the film, Roxana Saberi, was charged with espionage and sentenced to eight-years in prison. Kooshanejad and Shaghaghi were in the UK playing further dates and decided they had no choice but to stay, seeking asylum.

It’s 50 per cent control and 50 per cent [letting] the computer decide. The method that I have is I put units and processing on the sound, and after that I listen back to what the computer has decided as well. When I stretch a sound there are random elements that pop out of the waveform. So it’s a mix of me controlling all these chaotic things and also respecting the randomness of sound
Then I started listening to classical music a lot and learning classical composition, like harmony and learning more about counterpoint, and that’s when I could structure those unknown electronic sounds and recorded sounds that I was manipulating with the computer.
I had around 80 tracks that I finished a few months ago and I thought, this is too long for an album, but let’s try to make an album out of it. It’s not so different from GUUD but I think in terms of how I’m confident with putting the sound in tracks, it’s improved. It’s not as experimental, I’d say. Why not get rid of the idea that the computer's self-aware and actually try to implement the smallest bits of randomization using whatever technologies we have access to? Humans are best at taste because we have intention in finalizing and presenting something. The computer can create arpeggios and melodies — parts that I don’t necessarily want to spend time on.
In a sense, it's very narrow artificial intelligence: one function is performed by a machine, and we collaborate with it as if it's a human. When you go to a studio to work with a singer, you end up with lyrics, a melody, and a voice. I tried to make these three elements without having a singer involved.

When I went back to Iran, and I was listening to the CDs on my Walkman back then it was the first time I got introduced to Mogwai and Sigur Ros. A lot of crazy stuff. That was one of the points that changed my vision in music, especially the first Sigur Ros album, Von.
It’s how I learned to play keyboard. I would make up shapes on the keyboard and memorize chords by shape.
When I went to conservatory I learned how to read music, but I still think in terms of geometry.
This is how I see music and it’s why I’m a little frustrated with the ways people listen to my music and can’t see what I see when I make it. It’s the reason for the VR. It puts people there with me.

Burgeoning rock group Font had never played in public before, but lead guitarist Ashkan Kooshanejad and his bandmates still managed to draw a crowd of 600 to a private suburban villa.
this was Iran in 2007, and concerts featuring rock music and a mixed audience were strictly forbidden. More than 200 people were arrested that night, and Kooshanejad and the rest of his band were sentenced to three weeks in jail.
Kooshanejad and Shaghaghi decided to remain in the UK, where they eventually received asylum.
From listening to his debut album, GUUD , recently released on Olde English Spelling Bee , you wouldn't guess that he had a past as a rebel rocker—much less as a student of Persian classical music.

Eventually [Negar and I] parted ways musically and started doing our own stuff. She still does all the artwork for my albums. I started doing technical stuff and producing for other people, and then eventually I started doing solo stuff.
One of the things that I think is going to be instrumental in making new stuff in the club scene is Iranian traditional grooves, like bandari [music from the south coast of Iran]. If you can translate them in the right way you can use those rhythm sections in hip-hop [or] in club music. That's what I think Lafawndah did in “Tan”, and that's what I'm trying to do on this album. Taking traditional sounds and adapting the rhythm.
