Life & work

From santur to singing

Ali grew up in an English boarding school in India from the age of four. She moved to the United States with her mother in 1985 and began studying the santur. Her teacher was Manouchehr Sadeghi.189 She initially wanted to become an instrumentalist. While learning passages that required singing and playing together, her teacher encouraged her to develop her voice; a singing teacher at college later encouraged her too.10 She preferred the santur’s rougher folk sound to the piano-like approach she heard in Persian classical playing.4

In Vas, which she formed with percussionist Greg Ellis, she often sang without words.39 She connected that choice to growing up among different languages: she could respond to a song without understanding its words, and felt that words could not always express her feelings. In a 2002 interview, she said that only one piece across the group’s first three albums used Rumi’s poetry; the rest was wordless.9

The first solo albums and Niyaz

Ali had sung in an early-music choir and studied that repertoire before making Portals of Grace, released in 2002.1112 She used the album to explore connections between medieval European music and music of the Arab world.5 She produced the album and arranged most of the music, with Ellis contributing percussion, keyboards, vocal drones and string arrangements. Oud, cello and other acoustic instruments accompanied the voices.5

On Elysium for the Brave (2006), she sang predominantly in English for the first time, including lyrics she had written herself.1314 She worked with producer and keyboardist Carmen Rizzo, and with musicians including guitarist Trey Gunn and drummer Pat Mastelotto.15 Rizzo and multi-instrumentalist Loga Ramin Torkian were also her partners in Niyaz. On that group’s second album, Nine Heavens (2008), they combined electronics with Persian folk songs and Sufi poetry; Torkian drew, in particular, on Amir Khusro’s verse and old Iranian folk melodies.416

Lullabies and electronic production

After her son was born, Ali began collecting lullabies and writing some for him, without initially planning an album.6 That work became From Night to the Edge of Day (2011).17 She wanted to include minority regions: for “Noor” she fitted Tajik Persian words to a melody she had in mind. The wordless “Tenderness” grew from the first tune she sang to him.6 Turkish lullabies, words in the Sirjan dialect of Iran and Sorani Kurdish texts sat alongside one another, accompanied by Torkian’s lutes, Rizzo’s drones and the Bozzini String Quartet.18

Ali described some of her best songs as discoveries made while experimenting freely in the studio, which she then refined and shaped.10 For Phantoms (2019), she took on singing, programming and production herself. Torkian played guitars, Gabriel Ethier added synthesizers and programming, and Leah Metzler played cello; Michael Patterson mixed the album.7 She drew on the 1980s and 1990s music of 4AD and Wax Trax, and especially Depeche Mode, whose synthesizers had first made her want to create music with technology. She described her lyrics as rooted in her own experiences and philosophical outlook.19

Later work

In 2022, Ali performed with Torkian and an acoustic ensemble at the Getty Villa, where images were projected onto the museum facade for Persia After Hours. She later recalled the performance as one of her most cherished stage experiences.2021

She had written a follow-up to Phantoms but was unsure she would release it when her friend Christian, the owner of COP International, offered to fund it if she finished it.8 She released Synesthesia in November 2025, producing it herself and again working with Torkian on guitars and Patterson on the mix.22

That December, she worked with Efrén López on “Once More, All Is Green”, a track based on Hila Sedighi’s Persian poem about Iran’s political and social struggles. Ali sang and produced the track; López played several instruments and contributed production.23 In September 2026, she and Torkian released Niyaz’s Seven Realms of Attar, the musical foundation for a theatrical work inspired by Attar’s Conference of the Birds. They produced the album together, and Ali contributed voice, percussion, keyboards and programming.24

Azam Ali and Loga Ramin Torkian make up two-thirds of the Persian-Indian music trio Niyaz. Ali, who was born in Iran and moved to India when she was 4, and her husband Torkian, a native Iranian, now live in Los Angeles. They released their second album, Nine Heavens , earlier this year. The record, produced by third member Carmen Rizzo, blends modern electronica with old Persian folk songs and mystical Sufi poems. "One of the elements that is very appealing to us about Sufi poetry is that it does transcend cultural and religious specificity," Ali says. "It really is more about the struggles of the human soul, the struggles of the human experience, and is something that we all share. It really is a universal struggle."

Ali, the vocalist, is also an accomplished hammered-dulcimer player, having learned how to play the instrument under the tutelege of a Persian master. "In Persian classical music, they try to make it sound more like a piano," she says. "But I prefer the more folky, sort of rough sound."

So, when he would hear me singing, he would say: ”You know, there’s something in your voice, it makes me feel something. You should think about singing.” I always said no. From Night To the Edge of Day includes lullabies that have been sung for centuries, such as the Turkish folk song “Neni Desem,” as well as one written specifically for Ali and her son by the Palestinian oud player and singer Naser Musa. Here, songs from groups that have a history of conflict occupy the same musical and spiritual ground — Turks and Kurds, Persians and Arabs, Tajiks and Azeris.

Azam Ali’s voice is part of a rich texture that includes drones from Carmen Rizzo and various Middle Eastern lutes played by Loga Ramin Torkian. Both are her bandmates in Niyaz, the international world music ensemble they founded in 2005, and more to the point, Torkian is her husband and the father of Iman. Rounding out the ensemble are leading musicians from the Turkish, Iranian, Kurdish and Arab traditions as well as the Bozzini String Quartet from Montreal. Some of the languages may be unfamiliar: the trancey “Mehman,” with Ali’s voice soaring over a wash of electronics as a slow drumbeat chants in the background, is sung in the dialect of Sirjan, Iran. The simple, childlike melody of “Lai Lai” uses a text from the Sorani dialect of Iraqi Kurdistan.
