Azam Ali and Loga Ramin Torkian make up two-thirds of the Persian-Indian music trio Niyaz. Ali, who was born in Iran and moved to India when she was 4, and her husband Torkian, a native Iranian, now live in Los Angeles. They released their second album, Nine Heavens , earlier this year. The record, produced by third member Carmen Rizzo, blends modern electronica with old Persian folk songs and mystical Sufi poems. "One of the elements that is very appealing to us about Sufi poetry is that it does transcend cultural and religious specificity," Ali says. "It really is more about the struggles of the human soul, the struggles of the human experience, and is something that we all share. It really is a universal struggle."
Ali, the vocalist, is also an accomplished hammered-dulcimer player, having learned how to play the instrument under the tutelege of a Persian master. "In Persian classical music, they try to make it sound more like a piano," she says. "But I prefer the more folky, sort of rough sound."

I was not even thinking of making a record at that point," she says. "I just started gathering lullabies and wanted to write some for him. The best thing I could do as a mother was just sing to him. That's what I do."
My main reason in choosing this song is I really wanted to focus on minority regions. This is in Tajik Farsi. And I had this melody in mind and the words fit very well within that. It's a very simple song, just sleep."
Charged up, she set about putting melodies to the words, a true labor of love -- including one, for the wordless song 'Tenderness' that she says was the first tune she sang to Iman in the hospital.

She moved to the United States as a teenager with her mother in 1985 and immediately began to study the Santour (Persian Hammered Dulcimer).
My friend Christian, who owns COP International, is a good friend and lives in the Bay Area.
I said, "I've written a bunch of songs that's really a whole album in itself and kind-of a follow up to Phantoms but I don't think I'll be releasing it. I don't feel like I belong in this world anymore, my music." So, he said "Can I hear it?". I said sure, so we went upstairs and I played him what I had done and he said, "You know what? If you finish this album, I'll fund it and put it out there”.

I never wanted to be a singer, I wanted to be an instrumentalist. But when I was studying with my teacher, there were some passages that you had to learn to sing the part and play at the same time. So, when he would hear me singing, he would say: ”You know, there’s something in your voice, it makes me feel something. You should think about singing.” I always said no. Finally, when I went to college I took a course in singing and that teacher encouraged me too. And after a while people didn’t want to hear me play, they wanted to hear me sing.”
The best songs I’ve written came by accident. You know, you are just in the studio, experimenting and you just let yourself go and be free and suddenly it’s like falling over something. ”Oh, what’s that?” And you stay with the accident, you make it more refined, you shape it and it becomes something.

Azam Ali — Six Degrees Records
From Night To the Edge of Day includes lullabies that have been sung for centuries, such as the Turkish folk song “Neni Desem,” as well as one written specifically for Ali and her son by the Palestinian oud player and singer Naser Musa. Here, songs from groups that have a history of conflict occupy the same musical and spiritual ground — Turks and Kurds, Persians and Arabs, Tajiks and Azeris.
Azam Ali’s voice is part of a rich texture that includes drones from Carmen Rizzo and various Middle Eastern lutes played by Loga Ramin Torkian. Both are her bandmates in Niyaz, the international world music ensemble they founded in 2005, and more to the point, Torkian is her husband and the father of Iman. Rounding out the ensemble are leading musicians from the Turkish, Iranian, Kurdish and Arab traditions as well as the Bozzini String Quartet from Montreal. Some of the languages may be unfamiliar: the trancey “Mehman,” with Ali’s voice soaring over a wash of electronics as a slow drumbeat chants in the background, is sung in the dialect of Sirjan, Iran. The simple, childlike melody of “Lai Lai” uses a text from the Sorani dialect of Iraqi Kurdistan.

It’s different for every project I work on. There are so many artists who have inspired me along the way and from so many different cultures. For Phantoms, I tapped into a lot of the music that had influenced me from the 80s & 90s, such as music on the 4AD label as well as some heavier industrial music from Wax Trax Records in Chicago. My main doorway influence was Depeche Mode. I loved their gloomy melodies & synth sounds. It’s the first band that made me fall in love with the idea of utilizing technology as a tool for creating music.
All my lyrics are based on my experiences and philosophical outlook on life. You cannot connect with people through art unless you are expressing yourself from a very personal and honest place.

Performing Persia After Hours at the Getty Villa remains one of my most cherished memories on stage. The concert, presented in collaboration with Farhang Foundation, with whom I have had the honor of working many times over the years, felt like stepping into a living fairy tale. That night, under a full moon that rose perfectly center stage, the projections of ancient Persia came alive around us, enveloping the audience in a tapestry of history, mysticism, and light.
